Improving Workplace Safety
If you value the safety of your workforce, then you’ll want to be constantly improving the environment that they work in. Working to keep the office safe is more than just about compliance, as you can hope to keep your workers happy and valued.
Record Incidents
A safety incident is never pleasant but it serves as a good teaching moment. Recording all of the details of these will allow you to take action to stop them from happening again. All too often, these incidents are forgotten about and nothing is changed. Slips and trips from the result of not having such things as hand rails, balustrades and railings can result in real injuries. It can also be a loose cable or hazard that is responsible.
Keep an accurate accident book that you can refer to, as this will show you where the main culprits are in the office. Having employees out of work with broken bones costs your business money, so don’t miss out on improving the workplace.
Provide Equipment
At the start of a job, you might evaluate the equipment that your workers will need and deem it adequate. However, as the job goes on your employees could be made safer with additional equipment, so check in with them. As the ones actually doing the work, they’ll be more likely to be able to tell you what they need.
For example, they may have goggles for a job, but could be kept safer with a breathing mask too. This kind of proactive workplace safety is good for morale too, as your workers can see that you care about their health and wellbeing.
Go Above and Beyond
There are minimum standards out there that will tell you what you have to do, but you can actually go above and beyond this. Instead of just marking out a hazard, why not just get rid of it? This makes your workers happier and minimise the risks that are faced during the day.
With these kinds of things, it’s better to be safe than sorry. You can also reward employees that make a particular effort to uphold the safety of the entire team. This is a good way to keep the responsibilities with the employees rather than your management team.
Keep Things Tidy
One of the best ways to reduce risks and hazards is to ensure that the office is kept clean. This means there’s not anything laying around for people to trip over or areas that need to be watched out for. Encourage all of your workers to be responsible for their own items and ensure that they don’t leave these items laying around.
Small items like bags and satchels can be dangerous for your workers and for visitors too. Keep things tidy to make a good impression and also to minimise any risks that might be caused by them.
If you want to reduce absenteeism and make sure that you have the best workforce possible then keep the workplace safe. Just follow these simple guidelines and your office will become a better and safer place right away.
